Homemade calzones rotos are a delicious and easy to prepare Chilean dessert.  They consist of pieces of fried dough dipped in honey or melted chancaca, and are often sprinkled with powdered sugar.  They are a delicious indulgence that combines crunch and sweet in every bite.

Ingredients

For the mass:

• 2 cups of wheat flour

• 1/4 cup sugar

• 1/4 cup melted butter

• 2 eggs

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 pinch of salt

• Vegetable oil for frying

For the sprinkle:

• Powdered sugar (icing, impalpable) to taste

Make sure you have the basic ingredients ready, such as flour, eggs, milk and sugar, before you begin preparation.

Preparation

1. In a large bowl, mix the wheat flour, sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt.

2. Add the melted butter and eggs to the flour and sugar mixture.  Mix well until all the ingredients are combined and the dough begins to take shape.  You can use your hands to knead it if necessary.

3. Once the dough is smooth and uniform, let it rest for about 15-20 minutes, covering it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.

4. In a deep skillet, heat enough vegetable oil over medium-high heat to fry the torn calzones.

5. While the oil is heating, roll out the dough on a floured surface until it is about 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) thick.

6. Cut the dough into small strips or triangles, depending on your preference.  Triangles are a common way to cut them.

7. When the oil is hot (it should be about 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius), fry the dough strips in batches until golden and crispy.  This will take approximately 2-3 minutes per side.  Use a slotted spoon to carefully turn them over.

8. Remove the torn calzones from the oil and place them on absorbent paper to remove excess fat.

9. Generously sprinkle powdered sugar over the torn calzones while they are still warm.

10. Serve the calzones rotos immediately and enjoy them while they are fresh and crispy.

I hope you enjoy these delicious Chilean calzones rotos!  You can accompany them with a coffee or tea for an even tastier experience.
