Nun farts

Nun farts

Nun farts are a traditional sweet of Spanish gastronomy, especially popular during festive and religious times.  Its peculiar name comes from the way the fried dough puffs up when cooked, reminiscent of the sound of a “fart” or flatulence.  Their mild flavor and crunchy texture make them an irresistible delight for many palates.

Ingredients:

• 1 cup of water

• 1/2 cup butter

• 1 pinch of salt

• 1 cup of wheat flour

• 4 eggs

• Oil for frying

• Powdered sugar (optional)

Before you begin, make sure you have all your ingredients measured and prepared.  Keep the temperature of the oil constant for perfectly golden and fluffy nun farts.

Preparation:

1. In a saucepan, bring water, butter, and salt to a boil over medium-high heat.

2. Once the mixture is boiling and the butter has completely melted, remove the saucepan from the heat and add the flour all at once.  Stir quickly with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the saucepan.

3. Transfer the dough to a large bowl and let it cool for about 5 minutes.

4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition until the dough is smooth and shiny.

5. Heat plenty of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

6. With the help of two spoons, form the dough into balls and fry them in the hot oil until they are golden and crispy on the outside and cooked on the inside, about 3-4 minutes.

7. Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on kitchen paper to drain excess fat.

8. Optionally, sprinkle the nun farts with icing sugar before serving.

And ready!  Enjoy these delicious wind fritters, they are perfect to accompany a cup of coffee or hot chocolate!
